Upset Transition from formula to milk. HELP!

Post by Jeannette on Mon May 10, 2010 3:59 pm

So I'm having a hard time starting this...but I know I have to.

How do you make the transition from formula to whole milk?

Wesson is a tank. He NEEDS his bottles. The kid will eat a whole bowl of cereal, a whole yogurt cup, and an hour later, he POUNDS down a 7oz bottle. He's like this with all meals. He's not fat at ALL, he's just a hungry boy.

He'll get a bottle at 5am, breakfast 8am, bottle 9am, lunch 12pm, bottle 1pm, bottle 5pm, dinner 6pm, bottle 8:30pm, bedtime.

He like freaks. He'll drink juice and water out of a sippy but it's only a couple sips. His pediatrician told me to start but limit his milk intake to 16oz a day.

How am I going to take 16oz and replace all those bottles with milk?

I feel so lost...

Does he like Milk? With Brayden I took his bottle away once he turned one and just didn't give him a choice . . . I never regulated his milk intake though. If your worried about him getting too much whole milk, couldn't you get 1% or Skim and just start upping his intake of rice cereal? That is what I do with my kids. Every baby food Natalee eats is mixed with the rice cereal. Plus I have liquid vitamins for her with extra Calcium.

Wesson's never had a glass of milk. lol

They told me not to get 1% or 2% until he's at least 2 years old because of the necessary vitamins and stuff.

He also doesn't eat rice cereal anymore. lol

He gets a packet of oatmeal for breakfast and eats table food exclusively. No more rice cereal!

Instead of bottles give him snacks (gold fish, lots of snacks on the baby food isle lol remember that those puffs are pretty much nothing and just dissolve in your mouth). He can drink a lot of bottles because its just a liquid and basically no substance. So thats probably why he eats so much. More food less bottles! At one he should be having milk as a drink with is meals not as a snack or meal alone. Is he eating meat? Because that will help fill him up better.

I found a website that suggest 16-24 oz. of MILK. Remember MILK isn't the only thing to drink. He can drink water, juice, etc. If he isn't drinking...he isn't thirsty. If he really is thirsty he will drink. "You can take a horse to water but you can't make him drink" Yah know.

I didn't have any problems with the transition with Reese. I just put real milk in a sippy and thats what he drank lol he never had a problem with it...then again he eats just about everything!

(I totally don't feel good today...so I hope that all came out normal and not bitchy or pushy..or whatever I have a pounding head ache that I am trying to ignore..needless to say it isn't working lol )

GOODLUCK with the transition though! I know it can be tough sometimes! Say bye bye to the bottles!

No you're not being bitchy! lol

He eats so much snack food it's not even funny!

Here's his diet:

Breakfast
1 bowl of rice cereal (size equivalent to a packet of oatmeal)
1 Yoplait yogurt

1 bottle an hour later
A handful of snack mix...Yogurt drops, pretzels, goldfish, peanut butter crackers (he won't eat puffs anymore)

Lunch
Macaroni and cheese (he'll eat an entire EasyMac)
Sippy cup of juice (he'll only drink a few sips)
Snacks

1 bottle an hour later

Dinner
Whatever I'm eating...
Chicken, BBQ, pot roast, spaghetti, bread...

1 bottle an hour later

and then when he wakes up at 5am-ish, he'll get a morning bottle.

What does he do if you don't get him a bottle? Just give him a sippy of milk? Does he cry...does he expect a bottle? Or are you giving him one out of habit?

He like freaks out in the most tearful cries ever. He brings out the huge waterworks like he's a starving Ethiopian. I get him a bottle and he chugs it like he hasn't seen food before. Then, he's a happy camper.

I haven't done milk yet. I'm going to try it when I take my butt to the store and buy it. lol

lol hm. Try just giving him a sippy cup with milk. He really shouldn't be hungry after all your feeding him. BUT I don't see any meat at lunch. Why not try throwing in a slice of turkey. I know that when I eat noodles they don't last very long before I am hungry again. When your throwing in bottles instead throw in a sippy cup. If he really is hungry he will drink it like he does a bottle. Its a lot easier to drink a bottle then to eat a snack lol

i never really regulated my DD's milk intake at first either, altho she didnt really drink a ton of formula. One day i just stopped giving her formula completely and gave her milk instead, at first i would always make her a warm bottle of milk at night time. ohhh and we have a nice trick to get my daughter to eat rice cereal...shes 2 and still eats it Smile. we mix the cereal with yo baby yogurt, she loves it still.

will he hold the bottle himself? if so just put the milk in the bottle and let him drink from that and ever now and then just try a sippy cup, untill he gets used to it

Thats a good idea . . . replace the formula with milk in the bottle at first then slowly transition to the sippy cup!

Well, we started him on milk. He drink a few sips and then tosses it across the room. He'll suck on some apple juice like it's cool though.

I changed him from the regular formula to that Similac "Go and Grow" kind. It's for kids/toddlers 9months-24months. Cheaper too. We're working on it... lol

I'm not a lot of help. I nursed for a year and she just quit in me one day so she HAD to take milk. But do keep with the whole milk. It really is better for them.

Can yuo believe he's old enough to already be done with formula? Holy cow!

Ya the Pediatrician told me not to introduce 2% until he's about 2 years old or so.

I can't picture him without a bottle still. LMAO Although, the kid eats whole slices of pizza... cut up of course. lol

I've created a monster! teehee
