Jeannette I know you have a lab doggy. What kinda food do you feed him? We feed Gunner Pedigree but its is probably THE worst food we could feed him. He has really bad dandruff and I KNOW it has to do with that food but when we got him that was what we were feeding him. We are going to be switching foods once we get halfway through this bag start putting in the new food and transitioning him so he doesn't get a belly ache.

I was thinking Purina Pro Plan....it goes for about $28 for a bag of Large Breed puppy food.

I always used to have to buy the Nutro (I think that's what it is called) for my friend at the commissary. It was cheaper there. They had labs and they said that was the best. I really don't know though. No doggies here.

The only problem with the Nutro (which I can buy at the commissary much cheaper than say PetSmart) is the first ingredient is NOT a meat...but I have thought about switching him to it...its about $27 for the puppy food.

Chicken Meal, Ground Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Rice Bran

Chicken meal means that it could be chicken feet, chicken beaks, basically just chicken parts. Doesn't mean its MEAT!

Then of course rice, corn, flour, and rice bran is all fillers.

I don't know much about what to feed labs. I'm no help. What about Science Diet.

I love Science Diet and every vet I've ever been to recommends it. I think its basically because its the middle of the road food. It isn't the best (like the holistic brands) but its also not the worse (Ol' Roy, Pedigree, Kibble and Bits etc.)

I really am thinking I'll just do Science Diet...just because that is what we've done with Missy and she does great and her coat is so shiny.

I can buy Science Diet at the commy too Woot

Both dogs have gotten Pedigree Adult Puppy Chow forever.

Ironic the post, I'm contemplating switching their food because of the same issue. Gunny's ears are always infected and he has pretty bad dandruff... How did you know it was the food?

Purina gave Gunny a really bum belly so we won't be going back to that.

We go through a 40 pound bag a month so I'm going to start shopping around because, it's flippin expensive. lol

Oh, and for chicken.

You can do chicken, just stay away from the "chicken by-products"

THAT is what can contain the beaks, feet, etc.

Chicken or chicken meal is ok.

Yeah thats the only positive about Pedigree is its cheap...of course you get what you pay for though.

He has nasty poops too like runny yuck poops. I don't like that lol He also chews on his feet and skin all the time so I'm sure his skin is itchy.

When a dog has dandruff the common cause is the dog food. Usually because it doesn't have enough fatty acids (like fish oil).

I'm thinking I'll do Science Diet...at least give it a try if that doesn't work I'll switch to something else.

Don't you need a script for the Science Diet? Gunny was on that for a month and I almost went broke. lol This was back in his IBS days.

For the poop, could it be that your pup just isn't used to the food yet? When did you start transitioning?

I'm going to get some oatmeal bath stuff. I guess tea tree oil is excellent for them too during bathtime. Helps with the itchys.

I'm on the fence. Although Gunny has dandruff, I think it might be environmental. Both my dogs are scratching like hell and we're all on our deathbeds...

lol no you can get it from PetSmart. The commissary carries it here. Science Diet does have a prescription dog food too though.

You can also start giving them some yogurt and fish oil pills in their food. I hear that helps as well.

He has been on Pedigree since he was put on dry food. When we got him he was already eating Pedigree. He was three months on the 4th. (He was born on July 4th easy day to remember lol)

This has nothing to do with dog food brands, but when I had to board Sibel in Jacksonville she wasn't eating her food. So they added yogurt to it so she would eat it. Such a clever way of tricking them into eating. lol

That is good that she would eat it...most little dogs will just lick the yogurt away and leave everything else.

Jeannette you can also add tuna to their bowl once a week to that will help with getting the oil for their skin.

Gunners is just so bad with the dandruff and poops I want to change his food and hopefully that will help both.

we have our dog on Iams healthy naturals...he had some kind of food allergy that cause him to just keep scratching parts of his body causing him to loose hair(ear and nose, and constantly licked the bottom of his paw) and since we put him on this he has been great.

Soooo I put oil and a raw egg in his food (my mother's orders).

Yeaaaaa, Gunny looked at me like..."So, uh, am I supposed to do something here?" Meanwhile, Lady forced her way in, shoved Gunny out of the way and ate the whole bowl. ROFL

We did wet dog food ONCE.

I will NEVER do it again. Both dogs had diarrhea for a week. Not a chance in hell I'm doing that again. It was mixed with dry food too.

Found this website if anyone is interested in finding out what your dog food ranks! The foods we were looking into are only 2 star dog foods. The 6 star dog foods (that I've seen at PetSmart) go for around $50-$70 for a big bag of food :faint Like Nutro Dog Food is $27 at the commissary...I just can't imagine paying over $30 for a bag of dog food
