Got a crate anyway...

Post by Jeannette on Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:29 am

So a few weeks ago, Gunny pissed me off and I set out for another crate. The trainer at Petsmart told me,"Noooo, don't get him a crate. He'll injure himself. He's got separation anxiety. Give him treats to keep him occupied, blah blah blah."

I've done that. I've been freezing treats in the Kong and giving it to him ONLY when I leave (to excite him and anticipate the treats for when I leave), I've left the tv on (pisses me off to waste electricity but whatever), stopped paying attention to him for the first few minutes when I leave and come home...

Tough.

As of right now, he can injure his fucking self if it doesn't equate to what he destroyed in my house yesterday.

He SHREDDED my Generation Kill book. Took it off the shelf and SHRED it. You know how many pages that is?!?! I loved that book!

Then he shredded the box that the drill goes into and ATE my nebulizer cup/mouth piece (THAT pissed me off. He's lucky I have spares or he'd be on the wall next to the mounted fish...).

I don't give a damn what he does, I bought a new solid plastic travel crate ($89 at Petsmart Woot).

His ass can suffer until we get a yard.

Separation anxiety my ass... No dog is that stupid. He's just being an asshole.

It doesn't sound like separation anxiety to me. It sound like "I'm bored to death so I'm going to get myself out of this crate" problem.

As a Lab he has TONS of energy he doesn't mean to piss you off but since he doesn't get enough energy out he gets rid of it by getting out of his crate and destroying the house!

Pretty much. But until there's a yard, tough shit. He can deal in the crate.

There's a line of boredom and a bad dog. He's on the bad dog list.

I can understand some things he's gotten into, but now it's EVERYTHING. In 2-1/2 years I've NEVER had to make sure I had nothing on my counters.

Well sounds like discipline is another thing he is needing lol every time he gets something off the counter, whatever it be, even on the floor he needs to be told no and put back in his crate for a bit.

I know they say not to punish them with their crate but I've never had a issue with my dogs not wanting to be in their crate at night. I don't make them stay in there for ever. Just long enough to get the message across " if you can't be good then you aren't allowed out in the house!"

I figure once ya'll move and he is able to go run off energy in the yard he will be much better though!

That doesn't sound like sep. anxiety to me either... It sounds more like him acting out aka bad dog list. Just doing stuff he knows he's not supposed to in order to get a reaction out of you.

At least the crate will give you some small glimmer of peace and sanity. hugs

my sisters dog, scout(who is also my dogs brother) does the same thing...they had a metal crate and when she came home from work one day the door was completely bent...he rammed the door lol, he would chew anything when they were gone, he even put a hole in their couch one time, the vet even gave him some meds(like human meds) to calm his ass down but that still didnt work so they bought a small crate for him so he couldnt ram into the front. worked a little better but he was still a wreck when they came home. So when she moved into her new house they had a spare bedroom and they lock the dogs in the bedroom(theres absolutely nothing in the room) and hes an angel...so just hang in there until you get your new house!

Maybe Gunny is like the hulk and he morphs into this monstrous beast when you leave.

You'd probably become insta-famous on YouTube with the results. lol I'm telling you, you could make a blog just about your life with Gunny and end up with a book or tv deal.

For now. Until he finds a way out. However, I only spent $89 on this one. It seems pretty sturdy and the locking mechanism is decent.

Just give me like 3 months. lol

Nah, I can't do that.

We talked and if we don't find one this weekend or the next, we're going to wait until after Christmas.

It's too close to the holidays. I wanted to be in by Christmas because his family is coming down but that's just too much work. Packing and cleaning up this house, moving and arranging the new one...all in like 2 weeks... It takes a month or so to close on the house (per USAA). It wouldn't be so bad but I've got work and Wesson. lol
