Granola? Help?
LIZZZZZZZZZ.
So I have made granola twice. The first time, it was pretty random...but the base was brown sugar and maple syrup (I didn't have honey, which is what the recipe called for). It was alright.
The second time, I used honey. I didn't like it... After a day, my granola was soggy (in air tight tupperware!) and just...blech. Maybe I just don't favor honey....but ick.
Got any recipes?
I use regular ol' oats, blueberries, cranberries, walnuts, almonds, honey-roasted nuts, and m&ms.

Re: Granola? Help?
My granola is totally random. The basic I use is:
1/2 cup of honey, maple syrup, or corn syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar
a couple tablespoons of oil
vanilla or almond extract, depending on what flavor you want
Bring this mixture to a boil
So this is where you can add whatever you want. I use old fashioned oats, flax seed (adds good crunch and has lots of Omega 3's), dried fruit, coconut, and nuts.
I like to make a blueberry almond one. You really can add anything you want though!

Re: Granola? Help?
Does this give you two cookie-sheets worth? I can't remember the quantities of the base last time.
Flax seed is what gives the crunch?! I've been looking for crunch! I miss Honey Nut Clusters cereal. If I could have that kind of granola, I'd be set for LIFE.

Well it is a seed, and gives it more texture, but probably not the super crunch you are looking for! usually just make mine in a big roaster pan because I am too lazy to wash 2 pans, lol!

Oh! I forgot to tell you the last one I made was dark chocolate and cherry and it was the bomb-diggity.

Re: Granola? Help?
I wonder if I should bake mine a little longer then... Hmmmm. Mine is usually still kinda soggy and then it crisps' up after sitting on the counter for a bit.
I love it...the kids eat the hell out of it. Jon eats it by the handful...I want to mix it with yogurt, maybe some milk... It's so versatile!
I should try the flaxseed... it wouldn't hurt, especially for the omega-3.
How did you do dark chocolate and cherry?!
I want to hit up the farmers' market and get some fruits. Jon got me a dehydrater last year and I can already taste strawberries in my homemade granola.

Re: Granola? Help?
Man, I should do that! I have a dehydrator, but I pretty much only use it for fruit leather and jerky. Mmmmm....I should make some jerk this week!
I just added dried cherries and dark chocolate chips after the oat mixture was done cooking.
Farm and Fleet has the best stuff for granola. All the dried fruit and nuts...amazing!

I miss Fleet Farm and Farm and Fleet. Sigh
I think about that place all the time.
That's where I got my camo dishes.

I haven't done jerky yet... I'm afraid to screw up a $4 piece of meat.
I want to try the fruit leather, but I'm afraid of that too.
So far I've only dehydrated banana slices and apple slices. The apples were good but only in the first day. After that they were wayyyyy too chewy.

Re: Granola? Help?
Have you tried jerky with just plain deli meat though? It is pretty good! Teriyaki turkey jerky is awesome! You just have the deli cut the meat a little thick, marinade it, then dehydrate it!
Fruit leather is easy, you just blend fruit like a smoothie then dry it.
I think I should go to the Farm and Fleet today. I love that store. Especially at Christmas time. Flapping awesome.
