Say wha? I have a math problem for you....

Post by LaDonna Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:18 am

So I started Calculus this morning.... and the teacher emails quizzes that are a review for past math courses..... just a little refresher....

She marked me wrong on one question but I'm already wanting to argue.... I think I'm right....

So someone work this problem and let me know if you get the same things:

If x^2-x-6=0 then what is the smallest x value and what is the largest x value.

My answers: -3 and 2

-3 squared minus -3 equals 12, minus 6 = 6

2 squared minus 2 equals 2, minus 6 = -4

If you're using -3 as the first x and 2 as the second...

-3 squared minus 2 equals 7, minus 6 = 1

I hate math. lol

no no no.... like this:

sorry it should be + x -6....

so 3^2+(-3)-6=0
so 9-3-6=0

and

2^2+2-6=0
so 4+2-6=0

LaDonna, your work is correct, you just got lost in the balancing of signs for the answer.
x^2+x-6=0
(x-3)(x+2)=0 *this is from your work of plugging in/solving/quadratic equation... I'm not sure which method you used*
(x-3)=0 or (x+2)=0
x= 3 or x=-2
Ask if you can get half credit if you showed your work.
When plugging it back in...
(3^2)+3-6=0
(-2)^2+(-2)+6=0
or (3-3)(-2+2)=0

Using your answers on the quiz, (-3-3)(2+2) does not equal to 0
I hope my explanation helped.

I love math, until precalculus that is. I hate proving though. Other than that, being a math major wasn't an option for me, sadly.
