Laundry Soap Empty Laundry Soap

I saw Tate mention that she made her own, and I have been wanting to make my own for a while. Anyone make their own? If so what are your 'ingredients' ??

Laundry Soap Empty Re: Laundry Soap

Post by Tate Sat Jul 07, 2012 10:57 pm

I made mine on Wednesday! I :love it so far!

1 bar of laundry soap
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax

Grate the laundry soap put in a pan with 4 cups of water. Put on medium heat until all the soap has melted. (Meanwhile fill a 5 gallon bucket halfway with water) Then add 1 cup borax and 1 cup washing soda to the pan with the melted soap. Mix until dissolved. Pour into a 5 gallon bucket then fill the rest of the bucket up with water. Stir well and put lid on. Wait until morning and it should have gelled. It could be clumpy or separated but just mix it together really well.

I'm using a old orange juice bottle right now and you just take and fill the container up halfway with the gel gloop in the 5 gallon bucket then just fill the rest with water and viola you have your laundry soap. Mine is pretty watery but it seems to clean just fine and it doesn't really smell like anything. I think Liz uses essential oils to scent hers but I like the no scent lol

Each recipe varies slightly but all the ingredients are usually the same!

I use:

1/2 cup of Borax
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 bar of either Fels Napatha or Zote soap

Grate the soap, add about 6 cups of water, and melt the soap in the water in a huge pot. Add enough water to fill the pot. (You need a huuuuuge pot). That's it! I add essential oil too. Back when I had time to blog I had a post with the recipe and directions.

I'm going to try yours next time Liz because I hate having basically 10 gallons of laundry soap!

1 (4 lb 12 oz) Box of Borax- Found in the detergent aisle

1 (3 lb 7 oz) Box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda- Found in the detergent aisle

1 (3 lb) Container of OxyClean- Found in the detergent aisle. (This is optional but I highly recommend adding it)

2 (14.1 oz) Bars of Zote Soap- Found in the detergent aisle (we chose to do pink for the scent but the white would be just fine. You can also use Fels Naptha)

2 (2 lb) Boxes of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda- Found in the cooking aisle (You could also get 1 4 lb box, we just couldn’t find it when we went)

1-2 (55 oz) Bottle of Purex Crystals Fabric Softener- Found in the detergent aisle

See washing soda and borax are laundry enhancers so I don't see the need for the baking soda. I'm not really sure unless you have hard water why you'd have to use the fabric softener.

There is also a dry powder recipe that just uses the washing soda, borax and grated laundry soap too.

Does your turn into a nice gel, Liz?

Mine is pretty watery and I kinda hate that lol. I think I might not add as much water next time.

Yeah, sometimes it gets too gel-like and I have to add more water. When I make it I put it in mason jars, then if I need to add more water I can just add a little bit and shake it up.

Then again I guess I could just use it straight out of the 5 gallon bucket with out putting more water in it...I don't guess it really matters because I've seen so many different formulas lol !
